How to Replace a Huawei USB modem's Connection Manager with a Customised Dashboard

A quick guide on how to customise the Mobile Partner dashboard installer found on Huawei USB modems.

Backup and Customise

1) Connect the Huawei USB modem to a Windows PC and install the modem drivers
    2) Download the Huawei Dashboard Tool and open by double clicking.
    Note: Make sure no other software is accessing the modem (e.g. connection manager) otherwise the Huawei Dashboard Tool will not work
      3) Click OPTIONS  and verify the Modem virtual CD-ROM is selected in the drop down box.
        4) For ‘Output ISO image file’ select or type the path (e.g. c:\image.iso) to backup the current files stored on the modem’s virtual CD-ROM
          5) Click BACKUP

            Once the backup has completed, Mobile Partner can be customised by editing files in the data.bin file using a utility such as UltraISO.

            If the modem has enough space other programs can be added to the ISO image e.g. Firefox, network utilities or anything that you want.

            Note:  The connection manager software found on Huawei modems supplied by Vodafone is not based on Mobile Partner and cannot be customised. A completely fresh copy of Mobile Partner is required to replace the Vodafone connection software.

            Once the customisation changes have been made, save the files as an ISO image using UltraISO or similar utility.

            Create and Install

            1) Open Huawei Dashboard Tool
              2) For ‘Input ISO image file’ select the new customised ISO file
                3) For ‘Output dashboard installer file’ select a path and file name for the new installer (this is the file that will copy the new ISO image files onto the modem)
                  4) For ‘Change dashboard installer label’ enter any label
                    5) Unselect ‘E2xx Support only’. Assuming the modem isn’t a E2xx model (e.g. E220)
                      6) Tick ‘Delete temporary files’

                        7) Click CREATE DASHBOARD

                        8) Once the new dashboard file has been created it can be run to install the customised Mobile Partner installer on to a Huawei modem.

                        * UPDATE

                        If a different version of Mobile Partner is used to that configured in the SysConfig.dat file the installer will run everytime the modem is connected. To prevent this from happening complete the following:

                        Open SysConfig.dat in notepad and look for the section titled:

                        [EHIDS_PRODUCT_VERSION]

                        Under this section will be a value as show in the example below.

                        VALUE=21.003.27.00.03

                        The number must match the installed version number. If it’s different, Mobile Partner will attempt to install every time the modem’s connected.
