Each time a new modem is connected to your computer or the same modem is connected to a different port, a COM port is created. These COM ports are hidden unless the modem that created the port is physically connected.
It can be beneficial to remove all the ‘ghost’ devices relating to 3G modems, when experiencing connection problems.
The steps below explain how this is achieved:
- Click START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > COMMAND PROMPT
- At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 - Next type the following command and then press ENTER:
start devmgmt.msc - Click VIEW > SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES in Device Manager
- Delete all 3G modem related devices in the following sections:-
+ Ports (COM & LPT)
+ Modems
+ Network Adapters
+ Other Devices
+ Universal Serial Bus Controllers - When finished close Device Manager and the Command Prompt window
- Reboot your computer
